Prinicples of a Japanese Garden

Usually bonsai are brought inside only for display. Since they are viewed from the front and at eye level they must be placed on a stand, shelf or table. The background should be light, plain-muted colour without design. Companion pieces such as stones, small containers of grasses, or lacquer boxes may be added to the display. A scroll is frequently hung behind the bonsai and to one side. But other objects are incidental to the tree; they must not be distracting. The display should communicate to the viewer a serene feeling of nature reproduced in miniature.
