Garden Hose

If you've shopped for a new garden hose in the last few years, you'll know that even the simple garden hose has many options these days. But how do you know which hose is right for you?

The larger the inside diameter , the less water pressure you lose over distance. If your home water pressure is low (less than 40 psi), or if the hose will be running uphill, or you need an extra long one , then look for the largest diameter size available so as to minimize the pressure lost during use. Generally speaking, a 1/2 inch diameter is usually sufficient.

What makes one more heavy-duty is actually whether it is reinforced. A reinforced one will typically bend easily without kinking. It will also have a greater burst strength, durability and lifespan. Where possible, look for a product with couplings that are made of solid brass and crush-proof.

For a good-quality hose that is unlikely to kink, crack or burst, features heavy-duty fittings and also maintains its flexibility in the cold - don't expect to get off too cheaply, however considering that it will last many many years (with the proper care), then it's a good investment.

If you’re ever using your hose to fill up a swimming pool or know that your kids are going to be using it, be aware that not all hoses are suitable for possible drinking. Most hoses are made from recycled materials, and many of these have been proved to be carcinogens by various consumer groups and testing agencies. Many of the current products on the market today are also quite susceptible to the growth of mold, fungus, bacteria and even yeast. The darkened damp inside of a hose is actually the perfect breeding ground for these distasteful formations.

garden hoseTo avoid these concerns, you can look for one which has Microban antimicrobial protection to prevent unwanted bacterial growth. They may not available in your area though. To be safe, teach your children not to drink from it. Besides which, spiders and all sorts of creepy crawlies can make their home in them.

For vegetable beds and flower beds trickle irrigation is a very good way to provide evenly distributed moisture. This technique requires a special porous hose set at a low pressure and volume. These garden hoses are best placed alongside a row of vegetables or laid amidst flowers. They may even be buried or placed on the surface and left exposed or even covered by mulch. This method uses much less water and delivers it only where it’s specifically needed to give more uniform moisture.

To prevent cracking, never kink or sharply bend it either in use or in storage. Always store them by coiling them on a wide bracket or hose reel - never hang them on a sharp object.

In order to worry less about the lifetime of your new hose, make sure you purchase a durable one in the first place. A hose with heavy-duty brass couplings can be accidentally run over by a car and perform the same. Look out for ones with double-spiral reinforcing and a protective finish.

Think of it as an investment. If you’re spending money on things such as fertilizer, seeds and plants then it’s important to have a quality product that will perform.
